As a Vancouver wedding photographer, capturing beautiful moments of couples on their wedding day is such an honour and privilege. However, it is so important to me to remember that not all couples may be traditional, heterosexual couples. That’s why it is important for us to be inclusive and considerate of the LGBTQ+ community. Here’s how to be LGBTQ+ inclusive at your wedding.

Here are some tips on how to be inclusive at your wedding.
Use Gender-Neutral Language
When you are planning your wedding consider using gender-neutral language when referring to your wedding party or guests. Instead of using terms like “Bride” and “Groom”, consider using phrases like “Partner” or Spouse”. There are so many inclusive terms that you can use on a wedding day that will create a welcoming environment for all guests.
Other terms you can use that are gender-neutral are, Wedding Party, Attendant, Best Person, Person of Honour, Ring Bearer/Flower Person/Flower Pal, and so many more! It’s a simple yet impactful way to show support and respect for members of the LGBTQ+ community and to celebrate the diversity of all couples.

Offer Gender-Neutral Washrooms
It is important to ensure your guests feel welcomed and safe. If you can, find a way that all guests can feel included by offering gender-neutral washrooms. You can do this by simply re-signing the existing washrooms or providing additional facilities.

Book Inclusive Vendors
When booking vendors who are inclusive to the LGBTQ+ community, look for vendors who have experience in working with same-sex couples and who understand the importance of inclusivity. Feel free to ask for referrals, be upfront about your expectations of them, and look for diversity on their website and social platforms.

Consider Your Music Choices
Surprisingly, not everyone knows that music can be considered offensive or exclusionary to those within the LGBTQ+ community. Choose songs with inclusive lyrics and include music from LGBTQ+ artists, your DJ can help with this (if they are inclusive)! Feel free to ask for input from LGBTQ+ friends and communities and be open to song requests!
Educate Yourself and Your Guests
Don’t be afraid to take the time to educate yourself and your guests about the importance of inclusivity and why it matters. Have some resources on hand (like this blog post), and open conversations around the topic.

Be Aware of Pronouns
Knowing correct pronouns when addressing and referring to others is important in creating a welcoming and safe space. Be sure to ask your guests what their preferred pronouns are and make sure to use them throughout the day. Feel free to go even further and as your vendors respect pronouns as well. This can include (but isn’t limited) to your DJ.
Remember, that what is most important is to create a safe and welcoming space for your guests where everyone feels loved and seen. By taking these steps, you can help ensure that your wedding is celebrating love and inclusivity for all.
